Our Story
Kathy’s Beehive was created to expand year-round opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to build friendships, participate in activities, and feel connected to their community.
Inspired by the legacy of Kathy Thorpe—one of the pioneers who helped establish Special Olympics in Transylvania County—the club carries forward her heart for service, recreation, friendship, and inclusion.
Kathy’s Beehive is not replacing Special Olympics. It is designed to complement those opportunities by offering additional social, creative, recreational, and community activities throughout the year.
Our Mission
Kathy’s Beehive provides inclusive sports, social, recreational, artistic, service, and other life-enriching opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities so they may build friendships, grow in confidence, participate fully in community life, and live life to the fullest.
Our Vision
A community where everyone has a place in the hive—where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are welcomed, celebrated, connected through friendship, and given opportunities to grow, participate, and thrive.
